Manuka Planting Programme
Comvita is looking to partner with landowners of more than 40 hectares of marginal land which can be used to plant Manuka.
We believe in keeping it local
At Comvita, we believe it’s important to form long term partnerships and joint ventures with local landowners and beekeepers so all parties can best benefit from the opportunities available.
- We’re focussed on investing in the regions to ensure their success and future growth.
- In association with the Trees for Bees programme, we’re seeking to have productive Manuka plantations and a range of native plant species that assist with beehive health and increase biodiversity.
How does the partnership work?
We advise and assist landowners to plant Manuka on their land, and supply high-performance seedlings to help establish Manuka plantations. Once grown, these plantations are used to host Comvita’s Kiwi Bee hives and source bee products from.
Comvita aims to plant 2,000 hectares of Manuka per year in order to meet the high demand for Manuka honey, both here in New Zealand and overseas. We also partner with owners of land already dense in Manuka to place our hives on their properties.
Higher yielding, regionally specific Manuka
We’ve been undertaking research to better understand how to produce superior, healthy Manuka plants. This research is about how those plants, when grown in a variety of environments and with the help of bees, can produce high Unique Manuka Factor (UMF®) honey.
- We’ve succeeded in producing a range of high yielding Manuka cultivars to suit differing environments.
- We can now provide site specific planting recommendations to different landowners. Since 2004, we’ve developed more than 1,000 hectares of profitable and environmentally sustainable land dense in Manuka.

Sustainable Award Finalist
Comvita was delighted to be a finalist for the Restorative Impact Award at the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
Comvita Chief Supply Chain Officer, Colin Baskin, says the recognition is a reflection of the hard work that has gone into Comvita’s Manuka Planting Programme for more than 10 years. “We see Manuka planting sitting in the ‘best land use’ model, where by agricultural property owners can plant steep land or riparian waterways, where the land would otherwise be under-utilised. It’s great to be able to contribute positively to the natural environment, while the Manuka Planting Programme also helps ensure the sustainability of our business.”
