Medihoney™ Wound Care & First Aid

Medihoney™ is not just your everyday edible honey, Medihoney™ is a medical grade manuka honey that has been scientifically researched to support wound healing.

Comvita™ Medihoney Antibacterial Wound Gel is available in Pharmacies and Healthcare stores nationwide.

Medihoney wound care products work by creating a moist, low pH environment that promote new tissue formation and wound healing as well as reducing the risk of infection until the wound is completely healed.

First Aid Wound Management

Minor wounds such as cuts, grazes, burns or blisters can be managed at home. Following some simple steps will help reduce the risk of infection and promote optimal wound healing with minimal scarring.

Step 1: Wash your hands, this helps to avoid any further infection to the affected area. If possible put on surgical gloves, taking care if you are treating someone else for first aid.

Step 2: Stop the bleeding by applying pressure with gauze and elevate until bleeding stops.

Step 3: Clean the wound of dirt and debris with sterile saline solution or clean tap water and gently wash the skin around the wound. Avoid using materials such as cotton wool. Thorough cleaning reduces the risk of infection.

Step 4: Apply a generous amount of Medihoney Wound Gel to a dressing then cover the wound with the dressing, gently pressing down the dressing edges to secure in place.

Step 5: Change the dressing regularly depending on the severity of the wound, it is good practice to change a dressing daily to support optimal wound healing and to keep the dressing dry so the optimal wound healing environment isn’t altered.

Minor cuts, grazes, burns and blisters can be cared for at home but if your wound is deep then we recommend that you see a doctor as soon as possible.

Wound Care Myths

  • Its best to let your wound heal in the open air

Leaving your wound uncovered and open to the air will result in the wound hardening and forming a scab, this scab makes it difficult for skin cells to regenerate and heal and damaged area. Also, when wounds are open to the elements they are more likely to be re-damaged, making scarring more likely. Remember to cover the wound until completely healed.

  • Salt water helps wounds heal

We’ve all heard salt water helps the wound healing process but those wound care tips your parents gave you might not be so helpful. Salt water treatment to skin and wounds can cause the areas to lose moisture and cause the skin to become irritated. The key to fast healing is to keep the wound protected from drying out and forming a scab.
