Sustainability and the Environment

Hi. My name is Alan Bougen. I founded Comvita with Claude Stratford in 1974.  Over the next few months I would like to share with you my Comvita journey so far. Happy reading and please pop back soon for the next chapter.  Cheers Alan

Sustainability and the Environment: Working In Harmony with Nature

Chapter 7:
Sustainability is something that has always run deep in our DNA.  We are practically environmentalists by default.  We have to be.  That’s because beekeeping is all about biodiversity and stewarding, wherever possible, the natural world to create the very best natural products.  So by sheer virtue of our beekeeping heritage there is an unspoken common ethos within Comvita about environmental care and being as respectful to the planet and its resources as possible.

Right from the outset we have looked for smarter ways to do things.  We stayed away from gas guzzling cars and way back in the 80’s we even used solar power and other novel methods to all heat our water without unnecessarily drawing on the grid. Small initiatives that supported our underlying our ethos of doing good.

Today is no different.  We do our best - from the simple things - like recycling our factory and office waste, composting at our café, and using hybrid and fuel efficient vehicles - to the harder, more challenging tasks.

We are assessing the sustainability of our processes, our factory, our raw materials and all our key products over their entire lifecycle and reducing their carbon footprint.  We call this our “Hive to Honey” initiative.

Ultimately the bottom-line for Comvita is the ideal of a healthy natural world.

A world where we can live well by using the raw power of nature.  A world where our lifestyle and relationship with nature has a far better natural balance.

Dear Mr Bougen, I have just sent this e-mail to Comvita and after sending it coincidentally came across this page and saw your well respected name. I would appreciate your comment on my e-mail and take the liberty of forwarding it to you directly. Yours sincerely, Anthony Opie We have always been supportive and a fan of your products. My wife ran an organic shop some years ago and we have in our medicine cabinet an old 25ml bottle of your propolis tincture. It has a sepia backed label with Propolis in bold orange lettering. I have a bad bacterial/staphyloccus skin complaint. After using a variety of antibacterial items without success my wife produced this old bottle from the cupboard. I have a very scaly condition and it produced almost miraculous results however there was only enough to treat my foot and not the rest of my leg so I immediately ordered 4 bottles of your extra strength propolis tincture from Health Post. Well, we are really disappointed as the present day tincture is only a shadow of your earlier product and does not have the strength to work properly. The tincture in the old bottle is a very dark reddish/black and it appears completely different from the latest production which is obviously weak by comparison.(Batch 17139660) It is a shame that it is not possible to still purchase your earlier product. The person at Health Post told me that the bottles she supplied me with were the strongest that you supply. Anthony Opie 74, Harvey Rd., Marahau R D 2 Motueka 7197

Dear Mr Opie Tony Wright, our General Manager for Healthcare & Functional Foods has reviewed your query and his findings are as follows: “The product with the orange label is very old (at least 10 years old). The alcohol will have evaporated in the bottle over time, resulting in a concentration of the contents.” We will send you a complimentary bottle of our PFL30 Propolis Tincture. This product contains a high concentration (30mg) of flavonoids in each dose. We invite you to try it and your feedback would be most welcome. I have spoken with Alan about your concerns and he is in support of Tony’s analysis. Thanks and kind regards, Jael@Comvita
